BOWIE TALKS

Bowie Talks is a series of conferences, speeches and interviews about David Bowie that will be organized in cooperation with the UPF Barcelona School of Management, and will take place from May, 29th till July, 26th.

Conferences, speeches and interviews to listen to experts and some of David Bowie’s collaborators, such as the fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto, the promoter Daniel Grinbank, the documentary director Francis Whately or Denis O’Regan, official photographer of three Bowie’s international tours.

Together with experts, journalists and professors from the UPF Barcelona School of Management, they will analyze Bowie’s work and personality from different disciplines: audiovisual creation, cultural journalism, creative writing, finances, music industry, brand identity, and the world of fashion. They will offer multi-faceted view to gain a deep understanding on the multidisciplinary talent of one of the most important iconic artists from of the twentieth century.

The UPF Barcelona School of Management, school for graduate courses and masters from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, joins the ‘David Bowie is’ exhibition to provide a dialog between the academic knowledge of their professors and the artist’s collaborators experience. This is a great opportunity to approach an unconventional and provocative artist, and to review the culture, arts and contemporary social pulse keeping a view towards the future.

David Bowie is on tour. Opening talk / Hosted by Postgraduate Course in Global Music Business Management from the UPF Barcelona School of ManagementWith Daniel Grinbank and David Loscos.

David Bowie’s concerts were always the ideal setting to enjoy his multidisciplinary talent. The combination of visual, music and theatre elements in his shows was the expression of his creative universe, and the evidence of his condition as a unique artist.

In this talk among Daniel Grinbank and David Loscos, Director of the Postgraduate Course in Global Music Business Management, they will analyze the history of the first appearance of Bowie in Argentina, and the details of a relationship that concludes with the arrival in Barcelona of the exhibition ‘David Bowie is’.

Daniel Grinbank. Director of DG Entertainment, promoter of Bowie’s concerts in Latin America, and promoter of the ‘David Bowie is’ exhibition in Barcelona.

David Loscos. Director of the IMB International Music Business School, and director of the Postgraduate Course in Global Music Business Management at the UPF Barcelona School of Management.

David Bowie is Cultural Icon / Hosted by Master in Cultural Journalism from the UPF Barcelona School of Management. With Ramón Faura and Luis Hidalgo.

David Bowie became a cultural icon for several generations. He was a tireless talent seeker, and explored creative collaborations with artists he admired. His strategies to relate with he media were always unusual and had a great impact.

The speakers will try to analyze Bowie’s constantly changing career through his songs and what was happening in the world.

Luis Hidalgo. Music critic and professor on the Master in Cultural Journalism at the UPF Barcelona School of Management.

David Bowie is Fashion / Hosted by Postgraduate Course in Fashion Media and Journalism 3.0 from the UPF Barcelona School of Management

Some of the most emblematic Bowie designs arose from his collaboration with Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto, at the beginning of the seventies, when Bowie decided to use the designs Yamamoto had created for women.

To understand the role of fashion in Bowie’s artistic career and how the creative process of the artist was developed together with other collaborators, Pepa Bueno, director of the ACME (Spanish Association of Fashion Designers) and professor of the Postgraduate Course in Fashion Media and Journalism 3.0 at the UPF Barcelona School of Management, will interview Kansai Yamamoto, a key fashion designer from the twentieth century and a living legend of the avant-garde trends. At 73 years of age, Kansai Yamamoto keeps defending the innovative and transgressor spirit that allowed two great icons of the twentieth-century culture to find a creative space to share.

David Bowie is Economics / Hosted by Master in Financial Markets from the UPF Barcelona School of Management. With Gregor Pryor, Dr. Julia Jones and Xavier Brun.

Not only was David Bowie pioneer in the artistic world, but also in the world of finances. He was the first one taking the ownership of a new financial concept: the celebrity bonds, a type of bond backed up by intellectual property rights that allowed him to capitalize the royalties of this work, and finally became popular as the Bowie Bonds.

David Bowie is Branding / Hosted by Master in Brand Strategy and Creative Brand Management from the UPF Barcelona School of Management.With Denis O’Regan, Dr. Julia Jones and Oriol Costa.

David Bowie is considered a complete brand of music and popular culture for the last 50 years. The keys to create his identity were his differentiating values in the universe of pop, the innovative concepts he used on his work to be on fire for such a long creative period, his capacity to make his work a profitable one, his image and his musical discourse. As a changing and transforming artist, his creativity to build an indelible place in the market, among the audience and society, puts David Bowie in the pantheon of the great personal brands.

David Bowie is Literature / Hosted by Master in Literary Creation from the UPF Barcelona School of Management. With Rodrigo Fresán and Santi Carrillo.

Doubtlessly, David Bowie was -like Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ray Davies, Lou Reed, and many others- a great song writer. But he was also a great and restless reader.

In this talk, Santi Carrillo and Rodrigo Fresán will float, weightless and observant, through Mayor Tom’s library to talk about this Bowie, all of them and many more, and to analyze the lyrics and record covers.

David Bowie is on Screen / Hosted by Master in Creative Documentary from the UPF Barcelona School of Management. With Francis Whately and Andrés Hispano

The audiovisual dimension of Bowie’s career and the challenge to document a career such as his: a long, eclectic and significant one.

Andrés Hispano, professor of the Master in Creative Documentary at the UPF Barcelona School of Management, and Francis Whately, documentary maker of David Bowie, will approach the creative genius from the profound and rich experience of Whately to analyze the unique audiovisual proposals together with talents such as David Mallet, Julian Temple, Nicolas Roeg or Floria Sigismondi.
